I’m often asked by people “How can I improve my memory? It’s so bad!”  Your memory doesn’t have to be bad in order to make it better. Here are 7 quick tips on how to improve memory and help sharpen you mind and concentration.

Diet

Your brain, like the rest of your body, needs the right fuel to function. Starting your day off with a healthy and nutrioutios breakfast is an important start. A healthy diet throughout the day is important in maintaining the production of amino acids, which in turn produces a strong balance of neurotransmitters, the essential building blocks of brain chemistry.

Exercise Physically

Circulation of blood throughout the body provides the necessary oxygen and flow of nutrients the brain requires. Being in good shape, and exercising regularily improves your metabolism and circulation. Anything that impairs the circulation of oxygen to the brain, will not allow you memory to function as best it can. If you smoke, quit.

Pay Attention

It’s been said that attention is the “pathway to memory”. Make sure you are able to really listen to and understand the information you want to remember. Remove distractions from around you which may inhibit this. Really make a conscious effort to remain focused on what it is you wish to remember.

Get organized

A cluttered mind has very little chance of remembering much if everything is scattered. So too in the real world. Keep a planner for important dates and events. A diary, agenda, even something as simple as keeping notes will help you feel less cluttered mentally.

Memory Aids

Learn simple to use ways to help make learning fun and exciting. Simple memory aids will mean you’ll spend more time memoprizing and less time learning a complicated system. Fun and exciting memory aids will keep you wanting to use them. Pegging, rhyming, Loci, and story linking are all common forms of memory aids.

All Ways of Learning

Its always easier to recall something you’ve been able to see, hear and feel. So when its appropriate, try to include all your senses in storing a memory. What did the car look like? What colour, shape, sound did it make? How did you feel when you drove it? Incorporating all your senses will help lock the memory in not only on one level, but on all levels.

Maintain Your Brain

Your memory works best when it gets lots of sleep, rest and relaxation. Avoid undue amounts of stress. Drugs and alcohol impair the proper functioning of the brain over extended use, so avoid them as well. Here is where the old adged holds true: use it or lose it. Keep your brain stimulated and exercised by puzzles etc.

Your memory can stay sharp throughout your years if you treat it right. Do so, and you can look forward to many rewarding experiences.
